Atmore, Alabama, then the Bowen Homes projects in Atlanta: the youngest of nine children, who started boxing at seven. He was a late bloomer, 5 ft 8 and 147 pounds when he left high school, and still growing into his early twenties. In 1983 he won silver at the Pan American Games, and in 1984 he took the national Golden Gloves and an Olympic bronze in Los Angeles, after a disputed disqualification in the semi-final. That November, at 22, Evander Holyfield turned professional in New York City. Start at fight one and watch his career, one fight at a time.
