“Sugar” · 5 divisions · 1977–1997

Palmer Park, Maryland: a skinny kid who followed his older brother into the gym and found the fastest hands anyone there had seen. Named after Ray Charles, he became “Sugar” as an amateur, all speed, footwork and showmanship. At the 1976 Olympics in Montreal he fought with a photo of his girlfriend tucked in his sock and won gold at light welterweight. In February 1977, at 20, Sugar Ray Leonard turned professional in Baltimore, in front of a television audience. Start at fight one and watch the most gifted boxer of his generation build a career, one fight at a time.
