Crumlin, Dublin: a football-mad boy at Irish-language schools who took up boxing at 12, at Crumlin Boxing Club, to stand up to bullies. At 13 his family moved to Lucan, where his parents steered him into a plumbing apprenticeship he found dull, and where he started training in mixed martial arts with a friend. He admired Naseem Hamed, Muhammad Ali and Bruce Lee, and won his one amateur fight in 2007. In March 2008, at 19, Conor McGregor had his first professional MMA fight, in Dublin.
